Proposal Mistake #1 -Asking without a Ring
When asking the love of your life for her hand in marriage, there are some very basic rules you may want to pay attention to. The Knot took a survey on the top proposal mistakes and some of the things to steer clear of when proposing.

ASKING EMPTY-HANDED
In a recent survey by The Knot, “proposing with no ring” was ranked #1 as the biggest engagement faux pas a guy could make. Sure, your declaration of love and request for a lifetime commitment should be more important than whether or not you’re bearing jewelry, but you have to understand that to a woman (and her friends and her mother) an engagement won’t seem 100 percent legit unless she’s got an engagement ring to show for it. If you don’t feel confident enough to pick a bauble without her input, buy one from a jeweler with an exchange policy or borrow a family heirloom that can act as a placeholder until you go shopping together. (And if you’re not dead set on making your proposal a total surprise, you can take her ring-shopping in advance — more than 50 percent of women surveyed said that they had something to do with choosing their rings.)
It seems as though this would be the first thing on a guy’s mind when planning his proposal, but of course there are times that men are caught up in the emotions and aren’t thinking about proposal mistake number one.
Let me just say, that my husband was one of those, so I’m a little biased here. However, I recommend to all VISIONS clients planning their proposal to purchase the ring first.
The symbol of the engagement ring goes far beyond the diamond cut and precious metal chosen. It’s something that she will show off from the moment you put it on her finger. All of her friends and family will be saying, “Let me see the ring!”
Not having one for my engagement put me in an awkward place of…um he’s getting it. And then, of course having to feel as though you are apologizing to your loved ones on behalf of your new fiance, not cool.
So, rule of thumb purchase the ring first. Plan the proposal second, with the help of a proposal planner of course.
