Beating the Heat at an Outdoor Wedding

Every Chicagoan knows how unpredictable summer weather can be. If you’re having an outdoor wedding, make sure you’re prepared!

Outdoor weddings have always been an industry staple. However, planning your day in the great outdoors has its risks. Depending on the season, you could be risking rain, snow, cold, heat, wind, even bugs! A perfect day pays off handsomely, but what if the weather doesn’t cooperate with the vision of your dream day?53288a3c291d5$!400x

Most brides wish for a dry day, devoid of thunderstorms. However, weather that is too hot can be just as devastating to your outdoor wedding. Heat can lead to sliding makeup, irritated guests, and the potential for serious medical issues — especially if you have older relatives in attendance. For you August brides, we’re helping you and your guests keep cool even in a heat wave. If its 80 degrees at 8am, here are some key tips to avoiding potential problems at your outdoor wedding.

Keep it Matte – If you plan to get married under the summer sun, talk with your makeup artist about sweat-proof makeup. Typically, powered and stick products work better than liquid makeup, which melts off quicker.

Stay Hydrated – Keep the water flowing for the bridal party and for the guests! The last thing you want is a fainting bridesmaid or family member. Talk with your caterer about offering drinks before the ceremony. NOTE: this doesn’t mean alcoholic drinks, which dehydrates the body!

Re-purpose Your Programs – Turn your programs into cute DIY fans! Have your programs printed on cardboard and then glue them onto popsicle sticks. Have them waiting for your guests on their chairs!

Be Flexible – If the heat is truly dangerous, consider moving your wedding indoors. Summer brides should be aware of the risk of an outdoor wedding. Pick a venue with indoor space, and arrange an indoor back-up plan. It might not be what you had in mind, but neither are fainting guests!

If you’re having a summer wedding, keep an eye on the forecast and be prepared for the worst. Remember, outdoor weddings are risky, but if all goes well, your big day will be picture perfect!
